The “S” Word

I really wonder why every time people hear the world “socialism” is like if someone is saying there is a bomb in the bathroom. What I find interesting as well, is when someone says that they like socialism or that they are a socialist people automatically view them as some sort of anarchist, spy or someone attempting to overthrow the American government. It seems like the “fear of communism” from the Cold War stayed intact in most of American’s mind. I wouldn’t personally blame them, after all that is what most major corporations what the public to think about socialism. But is socialism really that evil? if not, then why do major corporations want America to stay as far away as possible from any socialistic reforms?

Legalize Drugs? Not a Solution

Lately, the social movement to legalized drugs, specially marijuana has been growing. Many arguments are used in order to support the legalization of marijuana, one of them is that it will end the “War on Drugs”, it will decrease the use of marijuana(Just as how Portugal and other countries ‘supposedly’ show). There has been an increase on liberal media for the support of the legalization of marijuana, not to mention news articles on many websites.

I believe that the legalization of marijuana will occur in the future, and perhaps within the next 5 years. I do agree that many states have irrational legal punishments for people caught in possession of marijuana, however I do not agree that legalizing drugs, even marijuana is going to decrease the use nor end the ‘War on Drugs’.

Update on Treyvon Martin

A lot has occurred since my last post about Trayvon Martin, a teenager who got shot by George Zimmerman. Just so we are clear, Mr. Zimmerman stills free, into hiding of course since he has received some threats. However, the point I am trying to make is that he is not arrested. Lately, a video has surfaced that can create more turmoil in this controversy, a video that shows Mr. Zimmerman without any blood, or any signs of being attacked after he shot Treyvon. The video is from CNN News. The video has caused many controversies, specially because it might show that Zimmerman might have lied that night.

The Straight Privilage

Recently, I reviewed the article “The White Privilege” by Peggy McIntosh which is an article featuring a list of all the “privileges” White people unconsciously have. For the article click here. Being a curious young adult I decided to look for more information about the article, however I was distracted by another article that was inspired by McIntosh’s article, the title of the article was “The Straight Privilege”. The article is very similar to McIntosh’s article, it features a list of “privileges” straight people unconsciously have. The list goes from TV characters, bed time stories to having to explain why people are straight. The article can be found here.

On February, 26 of the year 2012 Trayvon Martin, a 17-year old African American boy was shot causing his death. As the video from Fox News mentions, Trayvon was wearing a hoodie, which is a sweater with a hood. Perhaps, Trayvon was cold since it was raining that day.

Raising a Baby Without a Gender

This is something serious, and very risky, according to Dr. Koplewicz, a psychicatrist from a Huffington Post blog. The article refers to a Canadian couple who decided to raise their third child, Storm, without a gender. I will refer to the child as the Baby, instead of “it” just how Dr. Koplewicz referred to the Baby.

Sex and gender are not synonyms. Sex is usually defined by the genitals of the person. However, gender is something that we are taught. Gender is usually, broadly speaking, referred to as masculine or feminine. Of course, males are suppose to be masculine and females, feminine. What happens when a male is feminine? or vice versa? he is suddenly the point of attention, the cause of the end of the world, an abomination. However, why do we have such rigid gender roles? are they beneficial at all?

Transportation: What are my choices?

I’ve been using public transportation since I started college during the fall of 2010. I have always been proud of not relying on a car, and the expensive gas like most people. Whenever I see posters or commercials about being “green” I always chuckle and think that I can’t possibly be more”green”. My family recycles, I use public transportation and we always try to buy environmentally friendly products. However, when I was on the buy about a week ago I noticed a series of posters about “busology” which are comics about the proper etiquette to have while riding the bus. Then, I noticed a small icon, it said “CNG”, as I started recalling what it stands for the documentary “Gasland” shown in class came to my thoughts. Of course! CNG stands for Compressed Natural Gas, which what fuels the public buses in many cities of the United States in an attempt to be “green”.

I really don’t know if the public bus transportation knows how they obtain the compressed gas, but I will say they do. What I am referring to is hydraulic fracturing.

Obama Can’t be President Because of his Race

Recently, a man from Alaska with the name of  Gordon Warren Epperly filed a lawsuit to remove Obama’s name from the November election ballot because of his race. The full article is from the Huffington Post and can be read here. I actually managed to find a copy of the actual lawsuit filed, click here to see it. The following text if from the filed lawsuit:

“Barack Hussein Obama II, a.k.a. Barack Hussein Obama, a.ka. Barack H. Obama has the race status of being a “mulatto.” Barack Obama’s father (Barack Hussein Obama I) was a full blood Negro being born Nyang’oma Kogelo, Nyanza Province, Kenya and raised in the Colony of Kenya. Barack Obama’s mother (Stanley Ann Dunham) was a white Caucasian woman being born in Wichita, Kansas on November 29, 1942 and raised in the state of Washington and in the state of Hawaii.” Continue reading

Women’s rights; wait, what, they have rights?

Recently, February 16th to be exact the Oklahoma Senate passed the Personhood Act, which would ban all abortions if the House and governor approve the bill. Just some heads up this post is completely  biased. I mean, it’s full of my opinion like no other post so far. Please also keep in mind I am talking about abortions during the first trimester.

The bill defines life beginning at conception, this means that all abortions no matter the reason behind the act would be banned since it would be consider ending a life. These “Personhood” bills are quickly obtaining attention from all across the U.S, and some states might be drafting similar bills. Virginia is another state that might pass a similar “Personhood” act. The article also mentions that “This is the bill that would ban birth control like the Plan B pill and fertility treatments that it says would kill a child. It would also outlaw abortion in all cases, including rape or incest.” The bill is being pushed by Republicans (No surprise), many critics say that Republicans are strongly pushing these type of bills just to “defeat” Obama on the abortion issue.
